Tesla cancels Cybertruck reservations in Australia and New Zealand, refunds 2019 deposits

Oct 23, 2026 · Original Electrek ▼ Bearish

Electrek reports Tesla has ended plans to build the Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand and is refunding reservation holders in full — closing out a seven-year wait for local buyers.

Electrek reports Tesla emailed Australian and New Zealand Cybertruck reservation holders on the 23rd, saying "after careful consideration, plans to produce Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand have been discontinued." No further reason was given.

Australian deposits of A$150 were taken from November 2019; all payments will be refunded in full within 30 days. Holders who order a new Model 3 or Model Y get a free one-year FSD (Supervised) subscription. The Australian reservation page closed in May 2022, but no refunds were issued then.

Electrek's own analysis (not Tesla's) points to left-hand-drive-only production, a separate Australian certification requirement and low volumes that don't justify the cost. Tesla delivered 8,295 "Other Models" in Q3, and Electrek estimates 7,000–8,000 were Cybertrucks. The notice came a day after Q3 earnings.
