InsideEVs: Flying Roadster is not street legal — Rocket version not approved for public roads

Oct 18, 2026 · Original InsideEVs

InsideEVs says the flying Roadster won't be street legal; other reports note Tesla's own page lists the flying version as not approved for public roads — a gap between the demo buzz and a car buyers can drive.

InsideEVs reports that the newly unveiled flying Roadster is not a street-legal car. Beyond the demo buzz, what matters to shareholders is which configuration can actually be sold.

Other coverage says Musk answered legality questions with "it depends on your street, but it will be a viable car" and "not sure it's necessarily legal in all jurisdictions." Tesla's product page reportedly marks the flying version as not approved for public road use, with the Roadster split into Performance, Thrust and Rocket versions, of which only Rocket has flight capability.

Musk cited production in 2028 and Tesla has not announced pricing. Reservations are reported at $50,000 for Performance and $250,000 for Thrust. No aviation or road-safety approval for the flight capability has been reported.
