Tesla Semi wins largest-ever US order — 2,500 trucks that double the electric Class 8 fleet

Tesla Semi has landed the biggest electric truck contract in US freight history. A newly formed alliance, ZET SCALE (Zero-Emission Truck Shipper-Carrier Alliance Leading Electrification), named Tesla its primary OEM after a competitive bidding process.
ZET SCALE was launched by freight nonprofit Catalyst Mobility (formerly CALSTART) together with the Smart Freight Centre, with Microsoft and PepsiCo listed as founding shippers. The 2,500-truck order alone would nearly double the current US electric Class 8 fleet, and the alliance says it's targeting more than 10,000 trucks over time.
Kenworth, Volvo, and RIDE were named as secondary suppliers in the bidding process, but Tesla secured the primary slot. The timing is notable -- the announcement lands the same week Tesla brought its new 50,000-truck-a-year Nevada Semi factory online.
Still, capacity and deliveries are two different things. Analysts expect Tesla to deliver only 5,000 to 15,000 Semis in 2026, meaning it could take time before this order translates into actual revenue.
