Tesla tore down its Model S/X line in 46 days to build Optimus robots

Oct 30, 2026 · Original InsideEVs

Tesla decommissioned the Fremont Model S/X line in 46 days and is converting the space to an Optimus plant — though the 1M-per-year goal has no firm timeline.

Per InsideEVs, Tesla says decommissioning the Model S and X assembly line took 46 days and shared a video. The last units came off in May; Model S production began at Fremont in 2012 and Model X in 2015. Model 3 and Y production continues there.

Part of the freed floor is being converted into an Optimus humanoid robot plant, with factory equipment going onto the same floor. Musk said earlier this year the plant would eventually build one million units a year, but no concrete timeline exists.

Tesla is running a pilot line at Fremont and has ramped hiring, yet it has given no meaningful public Optimus update since last December. For shareholders it signals capacity being redirected from a retired car line to robots, but volume timing remains unproven.
