Musk declares Starship heat shield problem solved — tower catch attempt next
Elon Musk declared on SpaceX's first earnings call (Aug. 4) that he considers the Starship heat shield problem solved, based on data and visual inspection from the July 24 Flight 13 test, where most tiles held up with only minor damage. On SpaceX's first earnings call as a public company on August 4, Musk said: "I don't want to jinx it or anything, but I think I'd consider the heat shield problem solved at this point. All indications from data and visual inspection [say] we have solved it." His confidence stems from Flight 13, which launched July 24 and ended with a soft splashdown in the Indian Ocean off Western Australia — post-flight analysis showed most tiles remained attached, with only minor plasma streaking at the seams.
Building on that result, SpaceX plans to attempt the first tower catch of Starship's upper stage during Flight 14, targeted for later this month. SpaceX has already caught the Super Heavy booster three times with the launch tower's chopstick arms, but the upper stage — which travels to orbit and back — has never been caught. It's considered the last major hurdle to full reusability. Musk added that he expects flight cadence to ramp to at least once a day within a year.
The comments came right after SpaceX's first quarterly report as a public company, which showed revenue up 92% year-over-year alongside a sharp jump in AI and Starlink capital spending. Reusability economics directly determine Starship's per-launch cost, which underpins the profitability of Starlink and future Mars ambitions — a long-term positive signal for the SpaceX stake Tesla carries on its balance sheet.
