Tesla tells JPMorgan at Fremont: robotaxi strategy unchanged, Optimus external sales targeted for H2 2027

After visiting Tesla's Fremont plant, JPMorgan relayed that Tesla is intentionally holding back on adding more Model Y robotaxis and is instead confident in scaling Cybercab, while FSD V15 — built on seven 'core technologies' — already has roughly 40% of those running in the Austin robotaxi fleet. Optimus Gen 3's design and supply chain are locked in, with external sales targeted as early as H2 2027 — though both timelines echo promises Tesla has made and missed before.

JPMorgan analysts recently visited Tesla's Fremont factory and compiled a note on the latest robotaxi, FSD and Optimus roadmap based on what they heard on-site; Electrek and Investor's Business Daily each covered the note separately.

On robotaxi, Tesla confirmed it is deliberately holding back on adding more Model Y-based robotaxis. Instead, per JPMorgan, the company expressed confidence in scaling its purpose-built Cybercab. FSD V15 was described as a 'step-change,' composed of seven core technologies, roughly 40% of which are already running and being tested in the Austin robotaxi fleet. A full-scale robotaxi expansion built on complete V15 is being targeted for late 2026 through early 2027.

Optimus updates came alongside this. Tesla said the Gen 3 design is finalized and the supply chain is essentially locked in, with production line installation underway. The company laid out a three-phase commercialization path, with sales to outside buyers possible as early as the second half of 2027.

Electrek noted, however, that most of what's in the report repeats promises Tesla has made — and missed — before. Since this stems from an analyst channel check rather than an official company announcement, none of these timelines should be treated as confirmed guidance; both robotaxi and Optimus are 'progressing,' not 'locked in.'
